A sewage backup gets worse with every hour it sits. The water itself is contaminated; it carries bacteria, viruses, parasites, and whatever else has moved through the system before it backed up into your home. That’s why this isn’t a job for a wet vacuum and a pair of gloves. Category 3 water, as it’s officially classified, requires protective equipment, proper disposal, and disinfection that goes beyond what standard cleaning can achieve.

Sewer lines fail for different reasons depending on the property. In older Atlanta neighborhoods, tree roots crack clay tile laterals and find their way inside. In newer subdivisions, grease buildup and flushable wipes clog the main line. In commercial buildings, a single backed-up floor drain can contaminate hundreds of square feet before anyone notices. And in rural areas on septic systems, a failed drain field sends waste back into the house.

What we handle in a sewage cleanup:

Q: How can I tell if mold is hidden behind my walls?

A: No. Sewage contains pathogens that cause infections, gastrointestinal illness, and in rare cases, more serious disease. Cleaning without proper protective gear and disinfection protocol puts you and your family at risk. This is one of the few situations where professional help isn’t optional.

Q: What should I do while I wait for your team to arrive?

A: Keep everyone including pets out of the affected area. Don’t run the HVAC system, as that can spread contamination through the house. If the backup is ongoing, stop using water fixtures that feed the affected drain. Don’t try to clean anything with household products.

Q: Will my insurance cover sewage backup cleanup?

A: It depends on your policy. Many standard homeowners policies exclude sewage backup, but it can often be added as an endorsement. Some policies cover it as water damage. We document the loss thoroughly and work with your adjuster regardless of the coverage type.

Q: Do I need to replace carpet and drywall after a sewage backup?

A: In most cases, yes. Porous materials that come into contact with Category 3 water cannot be adequately cleaned and must be removed. This typically includes carpet, pad, drywall up to the contamination line, and insulation. We remove what’s necessary and document everything for your claim.

Q: How long does sewage cleanup take?

A: Most residential sewage cleanup takes two to four days for removal and drying, with reconstruction following. Commercial losses or larger affected areas take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after inspecting the damage.
